Background

Fifth Congress in 1967 adopted Resolution 12 (Cg-V)—Establishment of prizes for outstanding scientific research work in the field of meteorology. The Prize was subsequently named the WMO Research Award for Young Scientists. Since 1970, the Award has been granted by the Executive Council annually as a means of encouraging young scientists, particularly in developing countries, for outstanding research work in all fields of meteorology and hydrology. In the past more 30 years, 40 awards have been granted with the winners coming from more than 20 different countries.

Fourteenth World Meteorological Congress (May 2003) encouraged Members to continue to support the WMO Research Award for Young Scientists by submitting papers related to atmospheric science and hydrology.

Each year, the Permanent Representatives of Members with WMO are requested to nominate candidates for the Award in accordance with the established guidelines.
