A number of WMO Member countries- National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) plan to celebrate the WMO50 anniversary with special media events and promotional activities of their own. Here are some of the main components of their national plans:

Armenia
|
To mark the 70th anniversary of Armenia's NMHS, which coincides with World Meteorological Day on the 23 March 2000, special press events are planned in Armenia to include broadcasts on specific meteorological topics. Screening of the WMO50 video, televised discussions and a press conference on meteorological issues such as climate change are anticipated.

|
Celebrations are planned to commence on the 23d March 2000.

Australia
|
The Australian Weather Calendar 2000, with the theme of 'The World Meteorological Organization- 50 Years of Service' is now available through the Australian Bureau of Meteorology. The production of a poster and a booklet with WMO50 as the theme and a display set up in the Regional Offices of the Bureau of Meteorology will mark World Meteorological Day. A lecture is planned at the Head Office in Melbourne on the 23 March, while the WMO50 logo will be included on Bureau publications issued for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

Bahrain
|
National televised media coverage, press conferences and published statements will be part of Bahrain's World Meteorological Day celebrations. The Bahrain Meteorological Service will hold demonstrations during an Open Day for the general public and government officials. A series of lectures on the role of WMO for local universities, schools and other groups is planned. The installation of 6 auto remote weather stations will coincide with WMO 50, while a traveling exhibition illustrating the development and equipment of the Bahrain Meteorological Service over the years will be organized.

Media coverage and a press conference are anticipated.

Cyprus
|
The inauguration of the newly established Meteorological Museum on the 23 March 2000, national and local radio and television coverage and the issue of a commemorative stamp are planned as part of Cyprus' celebrations.

Egypt
|
An extensive media campaign, the release of published reports and articles on Egyptian Meteorological Association (EMA) activities, a documentary film on the EMA, unique events to observe World Meteorological Day and the issue of a commemorative stamp highlight Egypt's National Plans for celebration.

Hong Kong, China
|
The publication of a calendar focusing upon the theme of WMO50, illustrating progress made in meteorological services and their relationship with WMO, has been produced. An open day for the public will have staff available to answer questions, organize children's games, quizzes, the distribution of publicity material, souvenir items and media coverage. Special inclusion on the Hong Kong Observatory homepage of the WMO Secretary General's Message, the use of the WMO50 logo on a commemorative stamp, and a press conference and reception are planned.

Indonesia
|
| Indonesia will commemorate the WMO 50th Anniversary by publishing stamps, in cooperation with the national postal administration. The stamp publication is planned for 23 March 2000, and will be celebrated by the signing of the First Day Cover by the Indonesian Minister of Communications in Jakarta. |

Israel
|
Special leaflets and public information will be prepared to mark celebrations, along with publicity on the Internet.

Kazakhstan
|
The preparation of information materials on WMO and the Kazakhstan NMHS is underway, with a conference planned for government authorities, users of meteorological products and services and the media. An exhibition on WMO50 will demonstrate the work of the organization over the years.

Kenya
|
An Open Day at Meteorological Headquarters as well as at the out-stations for members of the public, schools and colleges to visit and ask questions on topical issues is planned. Feature articles will appear in the print media, while radio and television interviews with meteorologists on topics such as climate change will be broadcast. Kenya will also participate by preparing posters and educational material for all visitors to raise awareness of important issues as well as celebrating WMO50.

Kyrgyz Republic
|
A series of publications and statements issued for the media will advertise hydrometeorology and the role of WMO in sustainable development. A webpage is planned for the Kyrgyhydromet site, highlighting WMO's anniversary. A special meeting of staff members and veterans of the NHMS will be held to mark the occasion.

Macedonia, Republic of
|
Various activities involving the media (print, radio and television) are planned, along with a quiz and essay competition for students.

Madagascar
|
Along with the issuing of a commemorative stamp for WMO50, Madagascar will celebrate by arranging a media campaign on WMO and its own NHMS. A web page called "Meteo Madagascar" will be launched.

Malaysia
|
A mass media campaign on WMO including television broadcasts marking WMO50 is planned.
|
|
Mauritania
|
Radio and television coverage on various meteorological and hydrological topics, special activities such as Open Days, essays and poster competitions during World Meteorological Day and the issuing of a commemorative stamp are planned by Mauritania to observe WMO50.

Nigeria
|
A Ministerial media broadcast and interview will be featured to observe World Meteorological Day. The organization of public lectures, an exhibition of meteorological equipment and products, local and national media campaigns, seminars/symposia, lectures on WMO activities, particularly in relation to WMO's contribution to humanity, and the issuing of commemorative souvenirs highlight Nigeria's National Plans for celebration.

|
Issuance of a commemorative stamp by the National Postal Authority marking WMO50.

Peru
|
A Symposium entitled WMO: 50 Years of Service to Humanity; SENAMHI: XXXI Years at the Service of Peru" will take place on World Meteorological Day to highlight the activities and achievements of WMO and the national Meteorological and Hydrological Service.

Philippines
|
To coincide with the Philippines 135th anniversary of its National Meteorological Service, a wide range of celebrations will take place. A media seminar, a planetarium exhibition, radio and television announcements, World Meteorological Day lectures, a quiz, exhibits, a parade and films screened during an Open Day for the public are part of the Philippines' National Plans. A poster and photo contest, souvenir items and commemorative stamps will also mark the WMO50 anniversary and World Meteorological Day.

|
Publication of a book on the history and activities of WMO is anticipated.

Romania
|
The distribution in Romania of materials for mass media will feature WMO celebrations and mark the occasion of the 115th anniversary of Romanian meteorology. In January 2000 a special session of the Commission of Geophysics of the Romanian Academy meets to focus on meteorological and related geophysical issues.

Seychelles
|
An Open Day for the public is planned, along with a round table discussion on the importance of meteorology. To show the progress made in technological advancements, an exhibition of meteorological equipment will be displayed. A series of talks in schools will be included to promote the work of meteorologists and the Seychelles NMHS.

Spain
|
The publishing of articles in the general and specialized press, radio and television interviews and the organization of conferences are some of Spain's National Plans to celebrate. The possibility of a Trust Fund contribution is also being considered.

Switzerland
|
As the host of the WMO Secretariat, Switzerland will participate actively at national level but also in activities planned by the WMO Secretariat.

Tadjikstan
|
| The National Hydrological and Meteorological Service of the Republic of Tadjikistan has planned to prepare a CD-Rom upon the history of the National Meteorological Service, it's development, and cooperation with the WMO. The CD-Rom will be available in May 2000 in both Russian and English. |

Tunisia
|
On the 23 March 2000 a special exhibition on the Tunisian National Meteorological Service and WMO50 will be held. Special days devoted to WMO and the contributions of the NMS to sustainable development, along with a regional seminar on specific issues relating to Africa will be included in national commemorative plans.

United States of America
|
A special WMO50 presentation of WMO's activities and programs by Professor G.O.P. Obasi, Secretary General, was held during the 80th Annual Conference of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) in Long Beach, California on 10th January, 2000. A WMO50 Photo Exhibit and a stand with WMO publications and Homepage display were set up during the AMS Conference and Exhibition. Other activities include another WMO50 presentation to the media in San Franciso in June 2000 and an exhibition open to the general public at the UN Headquarters in New York during the Millenium Assembly.

Uzbekistan
|
National plans for celebration include the preparation of monthly information for media on WMO achievements, published material on WMO50, an Open Day, a series of lectures at universities through 2000, a media roundtable covering environmental issues and an Internet website on WMO50 and NMHSs.

Zambia
|
At Meteorological Headquarters in Zambia, a documentary film will be prepared for the Weather Report Studio. Organized talks and promotion on radio and television on the WMO50 theme and the importance of meteorology, a parade involving schools, colleges and the general public and the presentation of scientific papers by specialists will be part of celebrations. An award ceremony will also be held for individuals from schools, colleges and churches who have provided consistent rainfall data on a voluntary basis.
