The use of the WMO name, abbreviation and emblem (hereinafter emblem/name) is not allowed without the prior authorization by the Secretary-General of the Organization.

The use of the WMO emblem/name may be authorized only on condition that: (i) it is in the interest of the Organization and its Members; (ii) does not prejudice the impartiality of the WMO as an international Organization; (iii) WMO is involved in the activity; and (iv) WMO retains control over the activity to be carried out under its emblem/name.

In the case of commercial entities, permission can only be considered on the following additional conditions that (i) the principal aim of the intended use is to support WMO, its objectives and activities; (ii) the use of the emblem/name is performed with a view to raising funds to meet the objectives of the Organization; and (iii) measures are taken to avoid any suggestion that WMO endorses the commercial entity concerned, its products or services.

Permission for use of the emblem/name of WMO to indicate that the Organization is the co-sponsoring or co-operating body in the convening of a conference, seminar, other event or the publication of material shall be given only if the Secretary-General is satisfied that the meeting or publication in question relates to a subject that is within the field of competence of WMO or is likely to contribute to the attainment of the objectives of the Organization. In principle, permission will not be granted in respect of a meeting or publication which is being organized or produced mainly as a commercial undertaking for profit.

As a general rule, WMO will only co-sponsor or co-operate with a meeting, event or publication if it is organized or produced by:

A Government of a Member of WMO or the United Nations or an intergovernmental body established by a group of such governments;

An intergovernmental Organization with which WMO has concluded an agreement or arrangement of co-operation;

A non-governmental organization enjoying consultative status with WMO.

Permission to use the emblem/name of WMO can only be granted on a non-exclusive basis.
