GFCS Dialogue Side Event:

UK Met Office - Working together to support climate services in Africa

6 pm , Friday 26 October

Salle 18 (Level -1)

Objective:

Demonstrate how working in partnership can deliver relevant and useful climate services which provide real benefits on a local and national scale.
We will discuss the five pillars of the Global Framework for Climate Services and show, using real life case studies in Africa, how they can be applied.

Overall Idea

Using our work with Rwandan Met Service as the main theme, we will discuss applications of each of the five pillars in detail. The Met Office (UK) is already working with partners to deliver climate services in particular in countries vulnerable to climate change. This talk highlights the importance of working together and stakeholder engagement.

Some of the benefits these joint projects have delivered already are:

• Rebuilding observation networks
• Capacity Development particularly around communications, warnings and supporting adaptation;
• Working with African stakeholders to improve the understanding and practical prediction of African climate to help alleviate poverty.

Speakers

Julia Slingo, Met Office Chief Scientist

After a short presentation from Julia, we will encourage discussion from the floor around the theme looking at how more partnership working can be encouraged to deliver climate services.
