World Meteorological Day 23 March 2012

World Meteorological Day takes place every March 23 to celebrate the entry into force in 1950 of the Convention creating the World Meteorological Organization.

The theme for World Meteorological Day 2012 is Powering our future with weather, climate and water. This highlights the critical roles of weather, climate and water services in powering a sustainable future for us and for generations to come.  It also focuses on the Global Framework for Climate Services which is being developed by WMO and partners inside and outside the United Nations system to provide the information and services which will help us cope with a changing climate. The food security, water management, disaster risk reduction and health sectors will be a top priority in this.

The World Meteorological Day 2012 package, including a brochure and a written and video message from WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud, are available at

The ceremony starts at 14:30 at WMO headquarters with a welcome address by Mr Jarraud and statements by Special Guest Kandeh Yumkella, Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and Guest Speaker Jean Jouzel, President of the Société météorologique de France.

Journalists are welcome.

Report on Decadal Global Climate 2001-2010

To coincide with World Meteorological Day, WMO is releasing a report on the Global Climate 2001-2010, including information on temperatures, precipitation, sea ice, extreme weather and climate events, and concentrations of greenhouse gases which are contributing to climate change. This new report compliments WMO’s statement on the Status of the Global Climate 2011, which will also be released. The year 2011 was the warmest year on record with a La Niña event, which has a cooling influence.

Mr Jarraud will give a press conference 23 March at 12:00 at WMO headquarters to present the report, which will be made available to media beforehand under embargo.

International Symposium 22 March

An international symposium: Hydro-meteorological information: a tool for socio-economic development? takes place 22 March, coinciding with World Water Day 22 March and on the eve of World Meteorological Day. It is  organized by the Société Météorologique de France in the framework of the 9th International Weather & Climate Forum to be held at WMO headquarters. Journalists are invited to attend.
