Working Together for Safety at Sea

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen their cooperation in improving safety at sea.

The two organizations will collaborate on matters such as the use of satellite telecommunication services for the collection and dissemination of marine meteorological and oceanographic data to promote the safety of life and property at sea and the safe and efficient operation of ships, according to the newly signed Memorandum of Understanding.

They will also exchange information and hold regular consultations in the field of maritime communications for maritime safety and efficiency of navigation.

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed by WMO Secretary-General Michel Jarraud and IMSO Director General, Captain Esteban Pacha-Vicente. It is subject to approval by the IMSO Assembly of Parties to be held in 2014.

One of the WMO’s core mandates is providing meteorological ocean forecasting and warning information for navigation and emergency response, through the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System. This is an integrated communications system for maritime safety information, using satellite and terrestrial radio communications.

IMSO responsibilities include overseeing the public interests in the provision of maritime mobile satellite services for the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System and the Long Range Tracking and Identification of Ships.

The Memorandum of Understanding puts the existing cooperation between IMSO and WMO on a formal footing, thus helping to ensure that provision of mobile satellite services continues to meet user requirements.
