GEOSS and GCOS
Since the inception of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), GCOS has been involved in the development of 10-year Implementation Plan and its Reference Document for the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS). GCOS has been actively contributing to all GEO work plans.
GCOS is recognized as the climate component of the GEOSS. It strongly supports the 'Climate Societal Benefit Area' of GEOSS and addresses the need for systematic observation of many of the other eight benefit areas (e.g., Weather, Agriculture, Water, Energy, Biodiversity).
Full engagement in the development of the GEO process, particularly in the climate area, has been a mutually beneficial experience, and GEO has benefited from the maturity of the GCOS Implementation Plan as a reference document for the observation needs of the climate community.
To that end, the GCOS Programme regularly attends GEO plenary and committee meetings.
