International Flood Initiative

In view of the significant importance of flood management in support of sustainable development and the increasing flood losses in recent years, UNESCO and WMO in close collaboration with the United Nations University (UNU), the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS), the International Association for Hydraulic Engineering and Research (IAHR) and the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) have launched an International Flood Initiative (IFI) based on the concept paper developped jointly with other UN

agencies dealing with various facets of flood management will also be invited to join the Initiative. The Secretariat of IFI is located at the International Center for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM) in Tsukuba, Japan.

The Initiative is based on the concept of integrated flood management and aims to ensure that an end-to-end process of flood management, following risk management principles, duly considering prevention and mitigation measures and the positive and negative impacts of floods is put in place.
