Explanation of the criteria for classification and numbering of components     F00.3.13
(JUN 00)
Explanation of the dates on the component's description

1.   Purpose and objectives

The objective of telemetering is to collect weather or water quality data and transmit data by telecommunication facilities for centralised management.

2.   Description

The telemetering system consists of observatory stations and monitoring stations. The observatory stations are installed at observation points and transmit data to the monitoring stations. There may be as many as dozens of observatory stations. Measurement data is directed to the monitor stations by using microwaves, fiber optics, satellite, etc. as well as by radio and wire.

The unmanned operation of observatory stations requires servicing at a few months interval. Observatory stations can be installed in remote rural areas, because they can be powered by solar batteries, as well as by mains power.

3.   Input

The kinds of input data originating from sensors, such as weather and water quality, that are acceptable to unattended stations are:

     (1)   Digital signals (BCD 4 digits/value)
     (2)   Analogue signals (0-1 V, 4-20 mA, etc.)
     (3)   Pulse signals (iterative totaling of 0-999)
     (4)   Serial signals (RS232C, etc.)

4.   Output

The following kinds of output data are available at monitoring stations:

     (1)   Printout (on a continuous-forms printer)
     (2)   Serial output (to a processing computer, display panel, etc.).

5.   Operational requirements and restrictions

Frequency allocations are prerequisite to transmitting observatory data by radio. The operating ambient temperature ranges are -10 to 40 °C for observatory stations and -5 to 40 °C for monitoring stations, and the operating relative humidity ranges are 95% or less for observatory stations
and 90% or less for monitor stations.

6.   Form of presentation

A manual is provided for each type of equipment.

7.   Operational experience

In addition to domestic users in Japan, the telemetering system has so far been delivered to users in Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Bangladesh, Taiwan, China, Nepal, and Brazil.

8.   Originator and technical support

Hitachi Limited, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Japan Radio Co. Ltd., Toshiba Corporation, and Fujitsu Limited.

9.   Availability

From the HOMS National Reference Centre for Japan.

10.  Conditions on use

     The equipment is for sale.
