Dr Thomas Peterson (President)

Dr Thomas Peterson from USA (left) and Mr Serhat Sensoy from Turkey (right) were elected as the President and Vice-President of the Commission for Climatology (CCl) at its Fifteenth Session held in Antalya, Turkey from 19 to 24 February 2010

Thomas C. Peterson is the Chief Scientist at NOAA's National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, North Carolina. After earning his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from Colorado State University in 1991, Tom primarily engaged in creating NCDC's global land surface data set used to quantify long-term global climate change. Key areas of his expertise include data fidelity, international data exchange, global climate change analysis as well as the impacts of climate change. He was a lead author on the Nobel Prize winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's Fourth Assessment Report and served as co-chair and co-Editor-in-Chief of the 2009 report Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States. He is the recipient of one NOAA's Administrator's Award as well as three U.S. Department of Commerce Bronze Medal Awards and one Gold Medal Award. In 2004, Essential Science Indicators ranked him as one of the top 1% of scientists in the field of Geosciences based on Journal Citation Reports. He is the author or co-author of ~70 peer-reviewed publications and three data sets.


Mr Serhat Sensoy (Vice-President)

Mr Serhat Sensoy is Chief of the Climatology Division of Turkish State Meteorological Service. He has been preparing monthly, seasonal, annual and long-term climatological analyses, climate atlas, modelling of the climate parameters. He contributes WMO's and NOAA's State of the Climate Bulletin. He was the member of CCl/CLIVAR Expert Team on Climate Change Detection Monitoring and Indices (OPAG-2.1.). Mr Sensoy is member of Steering Group and WG1 of WMO Mediterranean Data Rescue Initiative. He attended two WMO's, two GCOS's and one GEO's workshops as an invited speaker. He is the author of about 52 papers related to climate and agriculture which are published in international proceedings and journals. Mr. Sensoy was the external reviewer of IPCC GPG LULUCF and 4th assessment reports. He was also reviewer of WMO 3rd edition of Climatology Guide. He has been preparing monitoring and, seasonal prediction products of temperature and precipitations as WMO RA VI Pilot RCC Networks. He is using ArcGIS in climatological applications.
