WMO at UNFCCC/COP Sessions
Every year WMO participates in the sessions of the Conference of Parties (COP) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), contributes fully in line with the United Nations climate change strategy elements, supports the UNFCCC negotiation process within an agreed framework, contributes to the implementation of the Nairobi Work Programme on Impacts, Vulnerability and Adaptation to Climate Change and addresses other activities as mandated by the World Meteorological Congress.
Since the entry into force of the UNFCCC, WMO co-sponsored bodies such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) have been playing an active role in the UNFCCC process. They are mandated to report regularly to the sessions of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) and COP on updated scientific assessments of climate change and systematic observation of the climate system. The WMO co-sponsored World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) provides updates on recent climate research developments and scientific findings to determine both the predictability of climate; and the effect of human activities on the climate system.
