The joint side event with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) entitled: Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS): Climate Information for Sustainable Development, was organized in the Blyde River Room from 13:45 to 14:45 hrs (Flyer).

The event was very well attended. Mr Arthur Rolle, Director, Bahamas Department of Meteorology and President, Regional Association IV (North America) moderated the side event. After the opening remarks from Mr Michel Jarraud, Mr Mahmoud Abu Zeid, Co-Chair of the High Level Task Force for GFCS, and President of Arab Water Council made a presentation on ’Climate Services for Sustainable Development’. Mr Adrian Simmons, Chair, Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) Steering Committee, spoke about ‘Investments in Observing Systems’.

Mr Carlo Scaramella, World Food Programme (WFP), made a presentation on ‘People-centered Approach for Provision of Climate Information and Services’.

These presentations were followed by brief statements from Douglas Nakashima/Albert Fischer (UNESCO/IOC), Stephen Gold (UNDP), Alberto Sandoval (FAO), Marina Maiero (WHO), Keith Alverson (UNEP), and Pedro Basabe (ISDR).

The side event demonstrated the value of "UN Delivering as One", with colleagues from seven different UN agencies and programmes expressing their support for GFCS and their appreciation to WMO for the side event.

Mr Adrian Simmons spoke at an evening side event organised by the UNFCCC on Funding for Climate Observations. He outlined the overall funding of the current observing system for weather and climate, and the requirements for additional spending. He spoke in particular on the needs for improving observation in developing countries. Other speakers reported on projects funded by the Global Environment Facility and by UNDP's Africa Adaptation programme.

Mr William Westermeyer gave a presentation on GCOS to a joint SBI/SBSTA Special Event on the Impact of the Implementation of Response Measures. This is part of the ongoing Forum that is considering the establishment of a work programme to examine the social and economic consequences for all countries of the implementation of mitigation measures. GCOS offered to engage in further dialogue as to the role observations might play in this process.
