The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) will participate in COP 17, Durban South Africa, 28 November-9 December 2011. It will organize a joint side event with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) entitled: Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS): Climate Information for Sustainable Development, Room 5, 13:45 to 14:45, 1 December (flyer). A side event on Multi-stakeholder Collaboration to Reinforce Adaptation Opportunities for African Pastoral Indigenous Peoples which is being organized by the the Chadian Ministry of Urban and Rural Hydrology, the Association des Femmes Peules Autochtones du Tchad (IFPAT) and the Indigenous Peoples of Africa Coordinating Committee (IPACC) will take place on Friday, 2 December 2011 from 20:15-21:45 hrs in Levubu River Room. WMO is among the co-sponsors of this side event.

WMO will also organize a side event on Improving Livelihood in Africa through GFCS in the Climate Change Response Expo (CCR), 12:30 to 14:30 hrs on 3 December (English flyer, French flyer).

WMO is co-sponsoring the World Ocean Day, on 3 December and the Secretary-General will deliver a special address in the opening session, 9:00-10:15 hrs (flyer).

WMO will organize the following press conferences:

  • Status of the Climate in 2011, 10:30 to 11:00 at room Yellowwood on 29 November
  • Implementation of the Global Framework on Climate Services (GFCS), 11:00 to 11:30, Room Yellowwood, 1 December

  • NOAA side event on Global Drought Monitoring Portal, 17:00 to 18:30, 28 November.
  • WMO Statement in the Plenary of the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) on 29 December.
  • Participation in the Nairobi Work Programme Focal Point Forum, 18:00 to 21:00, on 29 November.
  • UN Adaptation side event, chaired by the WMO Secretary General, 13:15 to 14:45, 5 December.
  • Participation and presentation in the UN Energy Meeting, 7 December.
  • Participation in the UN CEB High Level event, Room Amanzimoti river, 13:15 to 14:45, 7 December.
  • Warned and prepared- disasters prevented: The need for disaster risk reduction and involving children and youth, 7 December, 13:15 to 14:45. (Video)

  • Signing ceremony between WMO and the South African Weather Service (SAWS), at the Climate Change Response Expo (CCR), 8 December.

Exhibition booth

WMO will also set up an exhibition booth along with Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) and the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) to showcase latest climate related publications and distribute them.
