World Climate Programme (WCP)

The World Climate Programme (WCP) is an authoritative international scientific programme whose goals are to improve understanding of the climate system and to apply that understanding for the benefit of societies coping with climate variability and change.  The World Climate Programme was established following the staging of the First World Climate Conference in Geneva, Switzerland in February 1979.

The World Climate Programme acts as an integrating and catalytic agent to initiate and coordinate activities in the areas of climate data collection, climate research, applications and training, and to mobilize needed national and international resources.

This Programme is composed of the following major components:

World Climate Data and Monitoring Programme (WCDMP)

The World Climate Data and Monitoring Programme (WCDMP) is a program of the World Climate Programme that facilitates the effective collection and management of climate data and the monitoring of the global climate system, including the detection and assessment of climate variability and changes.

World Climate Applications and Services Programme (WCASP)

The World Climate Applications and Services Programme (WCASP) fosters the effective application of climate knowledge and information for the benefit of society and the provision of climate services, including the prediction of significant climate variations both natural and as a result of human activity.

The Climate Information and Prediction Services (CLIPS) project is an implementation arm of WCASP around the globe. It strives to take advantage of current data bases, increasing climate knowledge and improving prediction capabilities to limit the negative impacts of climate variability and to enhance planning activities based on the developing capacity of climate science.

World Climate Research Programme (WCRP)

The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), sponsored by the International Council for Science (ICSU), the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, is uniquely positioned to draw on the totality of climate-related systems, facilities and intellectual capabilities of more than 185 countries. Integrating new observations, research facilities and scientific breakthroughs is essential to progress in the inherently global task of advancing understanding of the processes that determine our climate.

World Climate Impact Assessment and Response Strategies Programme (WCIRP)

World Climate Impacts Assessment and Response Strategies Programme (WCIRP) is one of the WCP four components and is targeted at assessing the impacts of climate variability and changes that could markedly affect economic or social activities and thus contributing to the development of a range of socio-economic response strategies that could be used by governments and the community level. UNEP is the leading agency within WCIRP and implements the programme in partnership with WMO, FAO, IPCC and UNFCCC Secretariats.
