World Weather Records

Status

The World Weather Records for the 1991-2000 period have been published and is available on CD-ROM. These records consist of:

  • Station pressure
  • Sea level Pressure
  • Monthly Mean Temperature
  • Daily Maximum Temperature
  • Daily Minimum Temperature

Background

World Weather Records (WWR) have been published since 1927, and include monthly mean values of pressure, temperature and precipitation, as well as station metadata (notes documenting observation practices and station configurations).

The data elements to be included for the period 1991-2000 are monthly and annual means of station pressure, sea level pressure, mean temperature, maximum temperature and minimum temperature, and monthly and annual totals of precipitation.  These data are needed for the stations published in previous series of World Weather Records.  Additional stations are welcome, and should include data from the earliest record available through 2000.

The first issue included data from earliest records available at that time up to 1920. Data for periods 1921-30, 1931-40, 1941-50, 1951-60, 1961-70, 1971-80 and 1981-90 were published in succeeding issues. The present series continues, insofar as possible, the record of monthly mean values of station pressure, sea-level pressure, temperature, and monthly total precipitation for stations listed in previous volumes. In addition to these parameters, mean monthly maximum and minimum temperatures have been collected for many stations and are archived in digital files by the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC), USA. New stations have also been included.

Sources of Data

Unless otherwise stated in Station Notes, data were supplied to the Regional Co-ordinating Centre by national Meteorological Services whose addresses may be found in publications of the World Meteorological Organization.  With some exceptions, the data have been published as received by the United States from the meteorological services. CLINO data are long-term means and are supplied by the respective authorities.  If available, CLINO values submitted by the respective nations to the NCDC for inclusion in WMO Publication 847 (Climatological Normals (CLINO) for the Period 1961-1990) were used in lieu of other CLINO submissions.
