Call for tenders to host the ICSU World Data System IPO

The World Data System is an ICSU Interdisciplinary Body established in 2008. ICSU is now inviting tenders to host the ICSU World Data System International Programme Office (IPO) which will serve to manage and coordinate the establishment and operations of the ICSU World Data System, and take responsibility for outreach and promotional activities. Outcome of the WCRP workshop on Modelling Monsoon Intraseasonal Variability 2.8.2010
The WCRP/CLIVAR Asian-Australian Monsoon Panel, in conjunction with the WWRP-THORPEX/WCRP Year of Tropical Convection MJO Task Force, held a Workshop on Modelling Monsoon Intraseasonal Variability (ISV) in June 2010 at the APCC in Busan, Korea. The workshop assessed the current capability to predict and simulate ISV, developed a process-oriented diagnostics/metrics that target the underlying physical mechanisms of the ISV, and prioritized the future research needs and directions to improve simulation and prediction of ISV. Getting Ready for the 2nd Pan-GEWEX Science Meeting 27.7.2010
The meeting that will take place in Seattle, WA, USA, 23 to 27 August 2010, will provide the opportunity to develop a strategic plan for GEWEX that includes activities in the near-term and those that conform to the new WCRP structure in the post 2013 period. Read more.

UK Investigation clears Climate Scientists 16.7.2010
The latest investigation into the so-called climategate (stolen e-mails from climate scientists) largely cleared the scientists involved. The Independent Climate Change Email Review says the scientists acted honestly and that their research was reliable. Read Kevin Trenberth's comments on the report mentioned in the Science Magazine.
WCRP highly involved in IPCC AR5 15.7.2010
Six members of the Joint Scientific Committee (JSC) for WCRP have been nominated lead authors for the next IPCC Assessment (AR5). Several of them are coordinating lead authors including the former JSC chair, John Church. See the full list.
Chinese Version of WCRP Achievements at high level Climate Research Meeting 9.7.2010
The Chinese version of the WCRP Achievements Report was presented at the kick-off meeting of National Key Basic Research Programme of Global Change. Officials of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the Ministry of Finance (MOF) and the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS), and more than two hundred scientists attended the meeting. Farewell to Ann Alturo 30.6.2010
The JPS for WCRP says farewell to Ann Alturo, historically known as Ann Salini, as she retires officially on 1 July 2010. Ann has served in the WCRP secretariat since 2000, but actually joined WMO in 1977. Her professional expertise is well-known to the wide WCRP community but certainly the JPS will also miss her friendship. We hope that she will come and visit us often, for this is farewell and not goodbye.
The Ocean Circulation and the Gulf of Mexico Oil Slick 30.6.2010
Understanding the ocean circulation and modelling the world oceans has been one of the main objectives of WCRP thus contributing to a large range of research and operational marine activities. Prof. Martin Visbeck, WCRP/CLIVAR Co-chair, recently performed high resolution ocean general circulation model simulations and showed the potential of the spreading of the oil slick across the Atlantic Ocean towards Europe. The 31st session of the Joint Scientific Committee for WCRP took place in Antalya, Turkey, on 15-19 February 2010. The final report of the meeting has now been published and is available on-line.
Earth System Visioning Open Forum 17.6.2010
The International Council for Science (ICSU), in cooperation with the International Social Science Council (ISSC), will host in Paris an Open Forum on 22 June 2010. The Forum will explore how best to organize global research efforts in order to address the Grand Challenges in Global Sustainability Research. For those who are not able to attend the Open Forum, comments on the document can be posted on the visioning webpage.
Media Reporting of Climate Change Study 7.6.2010
As part of the ESSP session at the Global Media Forum, this study aims to understand how climate science is transmitted through the media and how this transmission influences policy. In particular, we are interested in studying the period (November 2009 - February 2010) encompassing the COP-15 in Copenhagen, and the journalistic coverage of the claims of IPCC errors and other issues of research misconduct. Update on the WCRP co-sponsored Working Group on the Climatic Importance of the Greater Agulhas System 3.6.2010
The study of the variability and change of the major western boundary current that flows along the east coast of Africa is important for improving understanding of the Agulhas interocean leakage and its regional and global climate impacts. The new established SCOR Working Group 136, co-sponsorec by WCRP, had its first meeting in February 2010 to discuss recent developments in understanding the greater Agulhas Current system and future research directions. New website and first News Note of the Global Environmental Change and Human Health (GECHH) 27.5.2010
The GECHH is a new Joint Project of the Earth System Science Partnership to respond to the growing need to understand better the multi-faceted and complex linkages between global environmental change and human health. WCRP and GCOS call for strengthening collaboration on climate data records 20.5.2010
In a joint letter, the Directors of the Global Climate Observing System and the World Climate Research Programme (GCOS/WCRP) are asking the worldwide organizations to support the international expert groups involved in scientific analysis, intercomparison and review of climate data records. WCRP wishes to congratulate Professors Peter Webster and Eric Wood for becoming AGU president-elected of Atmospheric Sciences and Hydrology Sections respectively. Prof. Webster, Georgia Tech, served as Co-chair of the CLIVAR Asian-Australian Monsoon Panel and Prof. Wood, Princeton University, leads the Hydrological Application WG within GEWEX CEOP. Read more.
Sustained Reprocessing and Reanalysis of Climate Data: a WCRP contribution to GEOSS 3.5.2010

WOAP-4 meeting outcomes 13.4.2010
The WCRP Observation and Assimilation Panel (WOAP) held its fourth meeting 29-31 March 2010, at the KlimaCampus of the University of Hamburg in Germany. The agenda with linked presentations is available on the meeting website and the written report will soon be available as well. The meeting was very successful and addressed many issues on observations, analysis, datasets and data management.

The Director of the PO takes a leading role in the development and implementation of CLIVAR under the general guidance of the CLIVAR Scientific Steering Group. WCRP is working closely with its core international Projects (CLIVAR, CliC, GEWEX and SPARC) and their affiliated network of scientists to develop its future programme plan and priorities. CLIVAR's core mission of observing, simulating and predicting changes in the earth’s climate system, with a focus on ocean-atmosphere interactions, will remain a central component of the WCRP research programme. WMO Statement on the Status of the Global Climate in 2009 23.3.2010
This final statement confirms the findings released on 8 December 2009. The current nominal ranking of 2009 places it as the fifth-warmest year on record since the beginning of instrumental climate records in 1850, according to data sources compiled by WMO. The decade of the 2000s (2000–2009) was warmer than the decade of the 1990s (1990–1999), which in turn was warmer than the 1980s (1980–1989). Read more...

WCRP and WMO Commission for Climatology: enhancing the use of climate information 3.3.2010
The World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and the WMO Commission for Climatology (CCl) have adopted a plan to use climate information for emerging social needs relating to adaptation and risk management. At their joint meeting in Antalya, Turkey (18 February 2010), they agreed on a statement that elaborates the implementation plan. The issues being addressed are in line with establishing the Global Framework for Climate Services, decided at World Climate Conference-3. Read the joint statement.

Each year on 23 March, the World Meteorological Organization, its 188 Members and the worldwide meteorological community celebrate World Meteorological Day around a chosen theme. This day commemorates the entry into force, on that date in 1950, of the WMO Convention creating the Organization. Subsequently, in 1951, WMO was designated a specialized agency of the United Nations System. This year, the theme is “60 years of service for your safety and well-being”.
