Role of the WMO Secretariat in a nuclear accident
The WMO Secretariat operates an Office for Emergency Response to Nuclear Accidents (ERNA). It has online dedicated resources for Internet, Fax and Voice communication and is monitored by a staff member during office hours.
The responsibilities of the WMO ERNA Office include:
- Receiving and authenticating/verifying incoming messages, relaying information to Geneva- based UN organizations (subject to bilateral arrangements)
Providing relevant information to WMO Members' NMHSs on request and making available information provided by the Accident State or other sources to dedicated WMO specialised centres of the GDPS
- Participating in test exercises
