Description |
The
Argo profiling float programme is supported by the
WMO and the IOC in association with the Joint Commission on Oceanography and Marine
Meteorology (JCOMM). At present; ARGO is maintaining a global array of about 3000 profiling floats to observe
the oceans in real time, and provide sub-surface temperature and salinity profiles in real time. The most challenging region for achieving the Argo objective of
3-degree average spacing in latitude and longitude is the Southern
Ocean. Along with satellite altimeters, the Argo array is initiating the oceanic
equivalent of present operational observing system for global atmosphere
and is contributing to research on the seasonal to interannual
climate variability and towards the significant improvement of climate prediction. |
