August 2007

Heavy rains, floods, flash floods, lightning, landslides, mudslides and monsoon
Bangladesh, Bulgaria, China, Greece, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, Pakistan, Philippines, Viet Nam, Sudan, USA

Bangladesh
At least 210 people died and more than 53000 contracted water-borne diseases, as a result of the worst floods in recent years to nearly 500 years.

Bulgaria
Seven people were drowned and four missing in severe flooding caused by heavy rains.

China
Flash floods killed 78 in central China and 18 were reported missing. Fourteen people were also killed in landslides with at least six others missing.

Greece
Summer storms flooded farms and village homes in the northern parts, destroying crops and forcing the evacuation of a campsite.

India
At least 311 people died as a result of monsoon floods.

Kenya
Twenty people were buried in mud after landslides.

Nigeria
At least 14 people were killed and thousands of families forced to leave their homes as a result of flash floods.

Democratic People’s Republic of Korea
Hundreds of people died and about 30,000 houses were swept away or destroyed.

Pakistan
At least four people were electrocuted during heavy rains in Karachi.

Philippines
Six people were killed in landslides triggered by rainfall.

Viet Nam
Flooding killed at least 32 people and displaced thousands.


Sudan
The worst floods in living memory claimed at least 72 lives with 73839 houses completely destroyed.

Japan
At least seven people died as the temperature hit 40.9°C.

Drought

Australia
Adelaide and Brisbane were hit by severe drought.

Tropical cyclones

Hurricane Dean
Jamaica, Mexico

Jamaica
About 300 000 people were displaced as Dean triggered mudslides and blocked roads.

Mexico
At least 10 people were killed as Dean flooded streets and toppled trees across the Yucatan Peninsula.


Typhoon Usagi
Japan

Eighteen people were injured and thousands made homeless.

Typhon Egay
Philippines

At least one person died and thousands were evacuated when Egay triggered heavy rains with gusty winds.

Tropical Storm Wutip
Philippines

Three people were killed, 17 injured and 13 declared missing when Wutip caused floods and landslides in the northern parts forcing thousands to seek shelter.
