World Meteorological Day 2009

girlEach year, on 23 March, the Secretariat and the 188 Members of the World Meteorological Organization, and the worldwide meteorological community celebrate World Meteorological Day around a chosen theme. This Day commemorates the entry into force, on that date in 1950, of the WMO Convention creating the Organization. Subsequently, in 1951, WMO was designated a specialized agency of the United Nations System.

World Meteorological Day will be celebrated this year on the theme “Weather, climate and the air we breathe”. It focuses specifically on air quality and its effects on human and ecosystem health.

A folder containing a brochure (WMO-No.1035), a poster and a message from the Secretary-General has been prepared in English, French, Russian and Spanish. The brochure, poster and message are available (pdfs) on the World Meteorological Day 2009 Website (www.wmo.int/wmd/).

Other items and information will be added in due course.

photo   The theme of World Meteorological Day is also that of the January 2009 WMO Bulletin, with articles on air quality and its manifestation in urban and surrounding regions, couplings with weather and climate change and the impact of pollutant deposition, including nitrogen, on the upper ocean.
