World
Meteorological Day 2006
The
Day was celebrated at WMO Headquarters on 23 March around
the theme “Preventing and mitigating natural disasters”.
The prestigious guest of honour was Sir David King, Chief
Scientific Adviser to HM Government, United Kingdom, who
gave an enlightened presentation entitled “From science to
action”. This presentation is available (Powerpoint) from

Another
notable event was the inauguration by Mr Sergei
Ordzhonikidze, Director-General of the United Nations Office
at Geneva, of an exhibition of paintings by renowned Swiss
artist, Hans Erni.
A
display of some 80 drawings and paintings on the theme of
weather by children and youngsters under 16 years of age
from around the world was also opened. The artworks cover
myriad aspects of weather and associated events, including
natural disasters. They are submissions to an ongoing
international competition launched by WMO through the
National Meteorological Services.
