US observatory celebrates 50 years of service

The observatory of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) at Mauna Loa in Hawaii has celebrated its 50th anniversary. NOAA—the parent agency of the National Weather Service—dedicated the facility on 28 June 1956 as a site to measure solar radiation and atmospheric trace gases that could potentially change the Earth’ s climate.

It later began monitoring air quality and changes in the stratosphere, the latter primarily to track the ozone hole and its recovery.

MeteoSwiss is 125 years old  

The Swiss Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology–MeteoSwiss–is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2006.

Having acquired a minibus equipped with the latest computer hardware needed for making in situ weather forecasts, MeteoSwiss can now accompany local events, which are often sports fixtures, besides demonstrating its technical capabilities.

MeteoSwiss gave a demonstration on 8 and 9 July in the Musée de la Science, Parc de la Perle du Lac, Geneva. The programme also included 50 or so other stands demonstrating the exciting world of Science under the theme Evolution–Revolution.

EUMETSAT celebrates its 20th anniversary  

WMO's partner organization, the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), establishes and maintains operational satellites which serve the meteorological and environmental interests of Europe's National Weather Services, as well as an ever-growing community of international users. It was founded on 19 June 1986.
