World Meteorological Day 2009 celebrations

World Meteorological Day 2009 in New York On the occasion of World Meteorological Day (WMD) on 23 March 2009, a booth was set up in the lobby of United Nations headquarters in New York by the WMO New York Liaison Office. Various WMO publications and other materials were displayed and distributed to visitors by the WMO representative, who also replied to questions about the Organization and its activities.



WMO partner organization joins in celebrating World Meteorological Day Luc Gnacadja, Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) issued a special message on the occasion of World Meteorological Day on 23 March, which offered “an excellent occasion to appreciate the importance of efforts made to gather meteorological knowledge for informed decisions by end users including relevant policy-makers”. He said that now, more than ever, the world understands the imposing challenges to land ecosystems in its relationship to weather, climate and the atmosphere. “As the WMO and NMHSs better understand the complex precipitation processes, the UNCCD can better help its Parties to manage desertification and the mitigate the effects of drought.” More
