United Nations Millennium Development GoalsThe eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) range from halving extreme poverty to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education by the target date of 2015. They form a blueprint agreed to by all the world’s countries and all the world’s leading development institutions. They have galvanized unprecedented efforts to meet the needs of the world’s poorest. Eradicating extreme poverty and hunger and ensuring environmental sustainability are two of the MDGs. The application of climate knowledge in risk management strategies helps alleviate poverty and support human welfare and safety. Climate, the environment and sustainable development are inextricably linked. WMO contributes to achieving the MDGs in collaboration with partners, in particular with respect to MDGS 1 and 7: 1 — Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
7—Ensure environmental sustainability
