Altering Landscapes art project

On the occasion of WCC-3, a contemporary art project, Altering Landscapes – Paysages Altérés, is exploring the relationship between climate and society. The project aims to help reveal how the youth of the world perceive the future:

How will climate change affect the way we live? What kind of world do we want and how can we achieve it?

For WCC-3, the project is combining the works of students in Geneva, Switzerland, with international artists.  A workshop with teenage students was held in Geneva in July.  Led by Hélène Burgi from Arte Libera and Intu Boedhihartono from International Union for the Conservation of Nature, the students discussed the issues of climate and climate change and used visual techniques to explore their own vision of a world of climate threats and opportunities.  Their paintings will be exhibited at WCC-3.

Also during WCC-3, the students, assisted by a group of young adults attending the conference, will paint a mural as permanent memento of the event and will invite other conference participants to contribute words or images to this “wall”.

Another component of the project is an installation art exhibition, which is aimed at the youth of Geneva.  This will take place from 28 August to 6 September in the vicinity of Bâtiment des Forces Motrices.  The goal is to provide a thought-provoking interpretation of climate through the eyes of several leading installation artists.  It will include art pieces, such as Air and Lungs by Shigeko Hirakawa and Wind in a Cage by Philippe Jaminet and Marc Siffert.

Altering landscapes is supported by the Health and Climate Foundation, the Global Humanitarian Forum, the International Research Institute for Climate and Society and the International Association of Broadcast Meteorology. More information about Altering Landscapes is available online.

WMO-GLOBE youth messages

WMO and the GLOBE Program invited young people to create compelling short messages on the topic "Youth working to solve local problems through weather and climate research". A selection of the messages submitted will be displayed on this Website in mid-August. For more, visit GLOBE.

Global Changemakers to send young delegates to WCC-3

Among the participants at WCC-3 are five young community activists, brought to the Conference by the British Council as part of the Global Changemakers programme ( http://www.globalchangemakers.net). The five Changemakers, who come from the United Kingdom, Canada, Ethiopia, Kuwait and Colombia, will be participating in a number of the working sessions on climate, contributing the voice of young experts from areas affected by the changing climate who are concerned about the negative impact of climate change. All five of them are actively involved in their countries and communities to spread awareness of the effects of climate change and address these effects in constructive ways.
