WCC-3 MEDIA ACTIVITIES, FACILITIES, AND ACCREDITATION

Accredited media will have access to the Centre International de Conferences Genève (CICG) and to the United Nations. Daily briefings for journalists will be held at 12:15 p.m. at CICG, in Room 15. The working press room will be Room 18, which will include Wi-Fi access, two printers and computers for “emergencies” only.

Opening hours at the CICG:

Monday, 31 August - Friday, 4 September: from 7:15 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Press conferences are open to media representatives only.

A public service announcement about benefits of using climate information for adaptation is available, on request, in English and international version. In addition, a video news release will be available during the Conference.

BROADCAST SERVICES

Eurovision is the Host Broadcaster for WCC-3.Eurovision Special Events will provide technical assistance to TV broadcasters covering the Conference. Host Broadcaster coverage will be distributed by Eurovision to individual cabled edit cabins rented by broadcasters and/or live. Eurovision Special Events will have an uplink on site and will provide full satellite service. SPECIAL EVENTS

During WCC-3, WMO and Media 21 with partners are co-organizing a workshop for journalists on anticipating climate risks. The workshop will bring together 20 journalists from both developed and developing countries who will cover the Conference and interact with experts from the public and private sectors. The World Climate Broadcasts Forum on 2 September 2009 will bring together professional weather presenter associations to address the public need for climate outlooks. Broadcast weather presenters from around the world will discuss best practices in communicating about climate and will interact with journalists and Conference participants. The Forum will take place in Room 5/6 with the main plenary from 8:30 to 12:00.

MEDIA ACCREDITATION BY THE UNITED NATIONS

Representatives of the mass media — press, photo, radio and television —need to be accredited for the coverage of the Conference.

A completed application form (see attached, available in English and French only), together with a letter of assignment on official letterhead from the Editor or Bureau Chief, a copy of the press card and a copy of the passport, should be sent to:

PLEASE NOTE:  application forms will be considered only if accompanied by a letter of assignment.  Incomplete applications will not be processed.  Accreditation is free of charge.

Correspondents possessing a valid United Nations grounds pass (United Nations Headquarters or United Nations Office at Geneva) do not need additional accreditation for the Conference.

All other members of the press corps must present themselves to the Security and Identity Unit, located “Pregny Gate”, 14 avenue de la Paix, Geneva, Switzerland, where they will be issued a badge that gives access to the United Nations grounds and for the CICG upon presentation of a national passport or another valid photo ID.

The Media Accreditation office will be open from today to 31 August, from 9 a.m. to 12 a.m and from 2 p.m to 6 p.m. On 31 August, the Media Accreditation office will be open from 8 a.m to 6 p.m. Please note that the office will be closed on Saturday, 29 August and Sunday, 30 August. Media representatives who pre-registered have the possibility, however, of picking up their badges at the CICG on Sunday, 30 August from 2 p.m to 6 p.m.

Media representatives accompanying a Head of State, Head of Government or Head of Delegation are also required to complete an application form for accreditation.  In these cases, the form must be attached to an official letter from the Permanent Mission of the country concerned and should be addressed to the Press and External Relations Section, United Nations Information Service, at the above address.  The letter must list the names of the media representatives with their functional titles and affiliation (i.e. news media organization).

For security reasons, each member of the press corps will be required to wear the press badge for the Conference.

ENTRY AND SCREENING

All media representatives are advised to arrive early to allow sufficient time for screening.  Last-minute arrivals may encounter delays.

Media with badges will have access to all public meetings.The plenary and parallel sessions will take place in at CICG. Seats will be reserved for the media in a press gallery.

Visual media: Television crews and photographers should make arrangements in advance for different placement within the rooms. A photo opportunity will be available during the High-Level Segment.

All accredited journalists will have access to all WCC-3 sessions, the media facilities and the CICG cafeteria.
