The annual average temperature of Brunei Darussalam increased by 0.6 degrees celsius for the period from 1970 to 2014, according to a preliminary study made by the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD). An increase in the country’s average annual rainfall in the last decade which is 2005 to 2015 was also recorded in the same study, said Communications Minister Yang Berhormat Dato Paduka Hj Mustappa Hj Sirat. In celebrating World Meteorological Day yesterday, the minister cited as an example the monthly total rainfall for January 2009 which stood at 977 millimetres, which was three times the average annual rainfall in the past 50 years. Read more...

The Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD) will be implementing the Weather Hazard Index System (WHIS) this year, said the department’s acting director. WHIS is a computer system that can identify locations in the sultanate that are at high risk of catching fire. Here is strong evidence that the Earth is already one degree Celsius hotter than at the start of the 20th century - and the past four years have been the hottest on record. Libya

The National Meteorological Centre ( NMC ) celebrated the World Meteorological Day 2016 ( 23 March ) at the theatre of the NMC's premises in Eswani. The celebration was attended by a galaxy of meteorological experts, government officials, the media and the NMC staff, including the Director-General of the NMC and a retired member. Read more about it here and here. Photos from the event can be found here.

Madagascar

Pour marquer la célébration de la Journée mondiale de la météorologie et les 115 ans de la Météo malgache, deux stations climatologiques automatiques ont été inaugurées, hier et avant-hier dans la région Vatovavy-Fitovinany. La première inauguration s’est déroulée, avant-hier au Centre Valbio de Ranomafana-Ifanadiana. Il s’agit d’un centre qui vient d’être intégré au sein de l’ Organisation météorologique mondiale (OMM), ce dernier ayant rempli les conditions nécessaires pour en devenir membre. De ce fait, il fera désormais partie du réseau d’observation de la météo. L’importance de cette station est la prise de décision dans la protection de la biodiversité de Ranomafana, cette ville étant un lieu stratégique touristique, donc pourvoyeuse de devises. Read more...

Nigerian Meteorological Agency

Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, has again urged Nigerians to prepare for a future with more hot days, warmer nights and heat waves. This is coming barely two weeks after the agency released its 2016 Seasonal Rainfall Prediction, SRP, with the damning revelation that the nation would experience late on-set, early cessation and lower- than-normal rainfall. Director General of NiMet, Dr. Anthony Anuforom, in a statement marking the 2016 World Meteorological Day, warned on the consequences of climate change on humanity, calling for a collective action to bring down the world temperature. In Palestine, this day is celebrated by Meteorological bodies, mainly (PMD). The PMD conducts optimal observation of climatic conditions in the direct or indirect service of different forms of life to contribute effectively to the development of the national economy. The Philippines
PAGASA-DOST reiterates awareness on a hotter, drier, and wetter future: Dry season has just officially started as declared by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). For some, it may mean the start of vacation from school, or the best time to hit the beach. However, amidst the excitement for the “summer” activities, PAGASA encourages the public to increase their awareness on the different effects of climate change and to help contribute in minimizing its effects. According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), “Climate Change is disrupting the natural pattern of the seasons, and it is increasing the frequency and intensity of certain extreme weather events”. Read more...

On World Met Day, the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security and IRI will launch a new climate service project in Kigali with Rwanda’s National Meteorological Agency and Ministry of Agriculture. The project hopes to benefit nearly one million farmers in the country over the next three years and reshape national food-security planning for the long term. CCAFS and IRI is sharing stories from their respective websites about the new project and will be streaming live Q&As using Periscope on Wednesday and will tag them #worldmetday. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) says its the climate records for 2015 show that the country experienced the driest year on record since 1904. This can be attributed to variability in weather patterns as a result of climate change and the El Niño weather phenomenon, which is expected to subside by June 2016, the weather service said here Wednesday it marked World Meteorological Day, observed this year under the theme "Creating a weather-smart nation – Innovating, Adapting and Facing the Future together". Read more...

Hotter, Drier, Wetter: Face the Future is the theme of the World Meteorological Day being commemorated today by 191 Member Countries of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), including Tonga. The year 2015 made history, with shattered temperature records, intense heat waves, exceptional rainfall, devastating drought and unusual tropical cyclone activity, according to the World Meteorological Organization. That record-breaking trend has continued in 2016. The WMO Statement on the Status of the Climate in 2015 gave details of the record land and sea surface temperatures, unabated ocean warming and sea level rise, shrinking sea ice extent, and extreme weather events around the world.
