Papua New Guinea National Weather Service launched Strategic Plan
Mr Roy Mumu, Secretary for the Department of Transport officially launched the National Weather Service’s Strategic Plan (2019-2023). The launching event is part of the Second Workshop of the CREWS Papua New Guinea Project’s Stakeholders Consultation. The Strategic Plan is the first ever plan for the NWS. It is aligned with Department of Transport Mid-Term Plan 2 and the Government of PN Vision 2050 Statement Pillars of Development, the National Government Mid-Term Development Plan (2018-2022), and the Pacific Island Meteorological Strategy Plan (PIMS) 2017-2026). Mr Mumu congratulated the NWS for the great achievement.

The Strategic Plan is the first ever plan for the NWS. Mr Samuel Maiha, Director of NWS in his official statement made it clear that the plan is roadmap for the NWS and Department of Transport and other sectors. The plan is prepared and owned by the staff of the NWS and its partners. The NWS Strategic Plan (2019-2023) vision is “To be an organization of strong regional standing. That is highly valued by the community for our pivotal role in enabling a safe, prosperous, secure and healthy Papua New Guinea”. The mission is “To provide relevant, reliable and accurate weather, climate, water and oceans services to people enabling them to make informed decision for their safety, well-being and prosperity and for environment sustainability”. The plan identifies six priority areas which will also assist to deliver the Department of Transport’s Key Result Areas. The priority areas are improved weather services, disaster risk reduction, improve climate and hydrological services, integrated observing and communication systems
The development of the Papua New Guinea NWS Startaegic Plan (2019-223) is supported by the Capacity Development Project as part of the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade sponsored activity to assist the PNG NWS to modernize and restructure with the PNG Government Ministry of Transport. The WMO CREWS Papua New Guinea is supported by the Climate Risk and Early Warning System (CREWS) Initiative.
